The Big Idea Show
We caught a fantastic show on YouTube, called “The Big Idea“, daily on CNBC US. Celebrating the American Dream as if nothing was impossible, host Donny Deutsch could not be more entertaining. It is a simple concept: the United States has most of billionaires on this planet and even more millionaires, who earned their money in thousands of interesting ways. Donny Deutsch lays down “the Roadmap to the American Dream” by interviewing people who made it to the top. Some of them really had a fantastic idea and succeeded to bring the idea to paper, then to a product and finally to a market. On top some of them had a business model that is scalable enough to make the real big money. However, there are some guest who seem to live the American Dream, but in fact just disperse some dust. They do not differ from an entrepreneur buying, refining and selling products through multiple channels as are are billions in China alike. On top of that, Donny does not compensate these poor examples with his American rhetoric:
“Five hundred bucks! That’s all it takes to change your life! I know you got it. If not, your girl friend gots it, your husband gots it. Somebody’s got five hundred bucks lying aroung. If you don’t love what you are doing now, you can start a business and make millions with this little as a couple a hundred bucks.”
Well, this will definitely not be enough to make millions, Donny. I know, I know, you’re not a consultant, you’re a showman. And I am sure you are making a lot of money with your daily show. Congrats, it is entertaining.
One success story, I would like to add, goes back 7 months and shows Gauri Nanda, who had invented “Clocky”. Donny Deutsch gave her the opportuinity and the media exposure at “The Bid Idea” in the segment called “my Idea will make millions”. He was right, the product went global and here is the interview:
It took her much longer than she thought, though. In an interview with the Boston Globe, that dates back 2 years, she projected the product to take off within the next year. She appeared in the Guardian, the New York Daily News, the New Scientist, the Discovery Planet and even on CNN.com - all back in 2005. But if you visit her website, you will recognize that she changed her public relations from selling the idea to selling the product. Congratulations! I have no idea how many items she has sold. Neither know I, which markets she has entered until now. However, I know “Clocky” for quite some time and saw it this January in China as well. I wanted to buy one, but postponed it, since I have my own company now ;-). Anyway, as soon as we are selling not only the idea, but a product, I am sure, Clocky will wake me up every morning.
